Associates of the National Center for Developmental Education are individuals with a high degree of knowledge and experience in learning assistance and developmental education. They serve as ajunct staff of the NCDE and assist with center consulting, research, and training projects by sharing their experience and expertise.

Dr. Gen Ramirez
Genevieve M. (Gen) Ramirez has been the Director of the Learning Assistance Center (LAC) at California State University, Long Beach since 1988, prior to which she served as a professor of Chicano and Mexican Literature, Spanish and Developmental Writing for students from bilingual backgrounds. At the university she has a leadership role in the Provost’s Student Success and retention initiatives and the university’s graduation writing proficiency program. As LAC Director, she manages the programming, personnel, and finances required to present Learning Skills instruction, tutoring in all content areas, Supplemental Instruction, and a large ESL tutorial program to a campus of 35,000 students. The LAC assists both undergraduate and graduate students campus-wide and provides contract services to students in various federal and state grant programs (TRIO, Title V, EOP, DSS, etc.). It also serves as a regional resource to local campuses seeking to develop or strengthen tutorial or SI programs. Dr. Ramirez has served as a faculty member at the Kellogg Institute and the Winter Institute and has been invited to present at each of the National Conferences on Research in Developmental Education. She has been a member of National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE) faculty teams evaluating the Texas Academic Skills Program and academic support services at Bakersfield Community College, and the Council for Opportunity in Education faculty responsible for training TRIO staff on Student Assessment and Program Evaluation. She also served on the research team of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Hispanic Success Study. Currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Developmental Education, she has focused much of her research on academic support for non-traditional, underprepared and ESL students, with several prior presentations and publications on the impact of Supplemental Instruction. |

Dr. N’wachi Tafari
Dr. Tafari currently serves Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) as the Division Head of the Division of Developmental Education. The Division consists of approximately 100 full- and part-time faculty members. The division has received accolades from the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE), the North Carolina Association for Developmental Education (NCADE), the NCDE, and has been cited as an outstanding program in a number of books and articles. Dr. Tafari also serves GTCC on the Achieving the Dream Initiative Task Force. Dr. Tafari is a NADE member and serves the organization on the Political Liaison Subcommittee for NADE as well as a NADE certification reviewer. Prior to joining GTCC, he served as the Coordinator for Master of Education programs at Coppin State University and as a Graduate Professor of Education. Before that, he served Baltimore City Community College as the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Acting Director of Publications, Director of the College’s Institute of InterCultural Understanding, and an Assistant Professor of Developmental Writing at Baltimore City Community College. Dr. Tafari’s award-winning doctoral research is on Black Racial Essentialism and the attitudes of African-American developmental writing students towards education and language. He has presented and copresented for colleges, universities, and professional conferences throughout the United States, has served as a faculty member and advisor for the Kellogg Institute, and collaborated on NCDE research projects. |
