Many questions may be answered in the Kellogg Handbook.
Q? What are the application deadlines for the Kellogg Institute?
A: Applications are taken and processed on a “first come, first served” basis. When the Institute is full (45 participants), we begin a waiting list. This list is used to fill vacated places on the class list. Institutional balance is taken into consideration to maintain balance between institutions requesting blocks of seats and individuals. The application and fees schedule is located on the NCDE web site: www.ncde.appstate.edu The waiting list does not carry forward to subsequent years; if you have applied, are on wait-list status, and do not receive a place in the Institute that summer your application and deposit will be returned and you will need to reapply the following year. NOTE: This is in compliance with new University policy and represents a change from years past when applications could be carried forward from year to year.
Q? What is the closest airport to Boone? Is there transportation from the airport to Boone?
A: The airport with the best connections and easiest access to Boone, NC is Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, NC. The Institute will provide complimentary shuttle service on the first scheduled Saturday from Charlotte-Douglas Airport to Boone. Shuttle departures will be scheduled between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. When making airline reservations, please keep in mind that you should arrive at the Charlotte airport by 2:00 p.m. On the final Friday of the Institute, a bus will depart Boone at 12 noon. If you plan to take the return shuttle to the airport, your departure flight should be scheduled no earlier than 3:00 p.m. that day.
There is no public transportation from the airport to Boone. If you are unable to book a flight that arrives in time to catch the shuttle, consider arriving Friday, staying overnight near the airport, and taking the first shuttle to Boone on Saturday. Q? What type of housing accommodation is included in my room and board fee?
A: Institute participants will be housed, single-occupancy, on the second floor of Newland Residence Hall. The residence hall experience is considered a vital component in the entire Kellogg Institute experience. The living-learning community provides numerous opportunities for the formal and informal sharing of ideas and networking among participants. All participants are encouraged to live on campus. Out of consideration for suitemates, guests will not be allowed to share residence hall rooms. We recommend reservations be made in a local motel.
The housing fee covers a two-room suite with a connecting bathroom; telephone, TV, and ethernet computer connection for one month; microwave and fridge; and weekly linen package (one pillow, 2 flat sheets, 2 pillow cases, 2 towels, 2 bath cloths, and one lightweight blanket). On our assigned floor there is a lounge area and an adjacent kitchen with refrigerator, stove, and microwave. Coin operated washer and dryer facilities are located on the first floor. Each floor is served by two stairwells and an elevator.
The housing fee also covers the cost of the University's required food plan. Under this plan, participants receive a meal card which may be used to purchase food in the University food areas. Typical Food Court costs are: Breakfast - $7.00, Lunch - $8.00, and Dinner - $10.00.
Q? If I take Kellogg for graduate credit do I need to apply to Appalachian State? Do I pay Kellogg or the University?
A: All Kellogg participants will be registered with the University for the practicum portion of the Institute. We will send you the required form. You do not need to apply to ASU directly, we will register you directly. If you indicate a desire to obtain the additional graduate credits, we will also handle that paperwork. Your fees and payments are made directly to the Kellogg Institute.
Q? Will I receive guidelines and information about developing my practicum project?
A: The practicum project is a required component of the Institute that is designed and developed during the summer in consultation with Institute staff and implemented the following year on your home campus. It is designed to be a project that uses information learned during the summer to enhance a segment of your program. We encourage participants to have tentative topics and objectives (supported by their administrators) in mind when they arrive at the Institute. This will facilitate the consultation process associated with practicum planning. The project will be enhanced with knowledge and information acquired at the Institute. A comprehensive Practicum Handbook will be available online and a hard copy distributed to participants upon arrival in Boone.
