Advanced Kellogg 2011
Advanced Kellogg 2011 was a great success. We'd like to thank Suzanne Walsh, Richard Rhodes, Hunter Boylan for a great program. It was nice to see all the Kellogg Alumni who attended as well. We look forward to hosting another Advanced Kellogg in 2013.

Advocating for Developmental Education
Sometimes it’s not enough to let our good works speak for themselves. Sometimes we have to speak on our own behalf. In times of financial uncertainty and budget reductions, speaking for ourselves is more important than ever.
That’s why the 2011 advanced Kellogg Institute focuses on advocating for developmental education, on campus, in the community, and with policy makers. This year’s presenters include…
Dr. Richard Rhodes – President of El Paso Community College
Dr. Rhodes is one of the most respected community college leaders in the U.S. Currently the President of El Paso Community College, he has just been selected as the new President of Austin Community College. Under his leadership, El Paso Community College has implemented one of the nation’s most successful developmental education efforts. He will talk with Kelloggers about what it takes to get and hold the attention of campus leaders and what is necessary to earn their support.
Dr. Suzanne Walsh – Senior Program Officer, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Dr. Walsh, a former community college student, has become one of the leading spokespersons for developmental education in the policy making community. In addition to serving as a program officer with the Gates Foundation, she has also worked with the Lumina and Heinz Foundations. She will discuss the “Big Picture” in developmental education on the national level as well as how foundations make grants to improve developmental education.
Dr. Hunter Boylan – Director, National Center for Developmental Education
Dr. Boylan needs no introduction to Kelloggers. In addition to his role as a scholar and researcher in developmental education, he is the former coordinator of NADE lobbying efforts in Washington and current Co-Chair of the NADE Political Liaison Committee. He will discuss the inner workings and hidden mechanisms of political liaison and encourage participants to serve as advocates for developmental education at the local and state level.
The Advanced Institute may be taken for three hours of graduate credit. This credit is applicable to all Appalachian State University graduate degrees. Those taking the Advanced Institute for credit will attend all class sessions, participate in class activities, and write a reaction paper.
