Strategic Learning: Another Kind of College Readiness
Featuring Dr. Claire Ellen Weinstein, University of Texas – Austin
Considerable discussion is taking place among postsecondary policy makers regarding the issue of college readiness. What do we mean by “readiness” for college and how do we measure it? So far, much of the discussion has focused on the reading, writing, and computational skills necessary for success in college. But learning skills are at least as important to college success as these other skills.
The 2009 advanced Kellogg Institute will focus on strategic learning as an essential skill for college readiness and success. Dr. Claire Ellen Weinstein, one of the world’s leading authorities on strategic learning will make a series of presentations on her award winning model of strategic learning. This model focuses on the components of students’ skill, will, and self regulation within the context of teacher expectations, requirements of the learning activity, social support, and available resources. Dr. Weinstein will also consult individually with institute participants to assist them in implementing plans for assessing and teaching strategic learning on their home campuses.
The Advanced Institute may be taken for three hours of graduate credit. This credit is applicable to all Appalachian State University graduate degrees. Those taking the Advanced Institute for credit will attend all class sessions, participate in class activities, and write a reaction paper.
