Kellogg Institute Seminar Descriptions*

Seminar I (Week 1):  ASSESSMENT and PLACEMENT

This seminar focuses on the use of cognitive and noncognitive assessment and placement measures for developmental students, the validity and reliability of instruments, the design and implementation of assessment systems, placement procedures, and the use of computer-adaptive testing.

Seminar II (Week 2):  DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

This seminar focuses on instructional design and development, theoretical/philosophical approaches to teaching, current research in developmental instruction, cognitive and noncognitive factors in learning, and classroom assessment.

Seminar III (Week 3):  ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES and DIVERSITY

This seminar focuses on applications of research-based interventions in tutoring, tutor training, developmental advising and counseling, and supplemental instruction. The second part of the week will focus on the importance of diversity.

Seminar IV (Week 4):  OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT and PROGRAM EVALUATION 

This seminar focuses on a general model for evaluation of developmental programs, the selection of evaluation criteria, formative and summative evaluation, qualitative and quantitative evaluation, the preparation of evaluation reports, and relevant research findings on program evaluation.

Following the summer residency, participants return to their home campuses to implement a program development project. The project should be based upon knowledge and skills acquired at the Institute and designed to benefit the participant's institution. Implementation of this project comprises the practicum portion of the Institute. Successful completion of the residency and the project leads to certification as a Developmental Education Specialist.
