Congos, D. H., & Schoeps, N. (1997). A model
for evaluating retention programs. The
Journal of Developmental Education, 21(2), 2-8, 24.
This article presents a model for analyzing the impact
of retention programs on students. The authors discuss
potential benefits and difficulties of this type of research
and identify eight steps in the research model. These include: (a)
identifying the dependent and independent variables, (b) gathering
data on the independent variable chosen, (c) maintaining on-going
data on information needed for dependent variables, (d) entering
data into the computer in an organized format, (e) defining criteria
that determines who is an attendee or participant, (f) analyzing
the data using appropriate software, (g) setting up results in
a readable manner with explanatory narratives, and (h) drawing
conclusions from the data and adapting them to the appropriate
format for reports to the administration or for publication. Examples
from research done on a Supplemental Instruction program at a
four-year public urban university are included.
